Abortion Pill

Notes:
The first medication is FDA approved and works by blocking the natural hormones needed to maintain an early pregnancy.
The second medication, also FDA approved and safely used for many years, helps soften the cervix and cause the uterus to contract. It has long been used in obstetrics to help start labor and in other medical treatments.
The most commonly reported side effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea of brief duration. No other side effects or adverse reactions have been reported at the dosage used in this method of pregnancy termination. They will help the uterus to expel the pregnancy.
Abortion Pill up to 10 weeks
The Abortion Pill is a non-surgical method used to end an unexpected or unwanted pregnancy. It is also known as a medication abortion or medical abortion.
You MUST review your Patient Rights and Responsibilities before you come in for your procedure.
What to Expect – First Visit
If you are eligible for the non-surgical medical abortion and choose to proceed:
- Our compassionate team will fully inform you of the risks and benefits of a non-surgical medical abortion.
- We will review your medical history.
- Perform a gynecological examination with a sonogram to verify and measure your pregnancy.
- After reviewing your medical history for any contra indications, our physician will discuss the non-surgical medical abortion with you.
- At this time, feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding the procedure
- You will take a pill by mouth and receive 4 pills to take home with you.
- The tablets to take at home will be given to you with instructions on how to take them orally.
- The tablets should be taken 8 to 48 hours after taking the first pill at our office. Approximately 90% of women completely expel the uterine contents within 24 hours of taking the pills. You will experience vaginal bleeding similar to a heavy menstrual period with the passage of blood clots. However, cramps may be intense. You will most likely experience heavy cramping within 7-8 hours from taking the tablets and very likely the discomfort may only last 3 hours or so.
- Prescriptions for cramping and nausea and/or vomiting will be prescribed for you. Other medications may be prescribed depending on your medical history.
- Do not use any other medications than those we give you because they contain anti-prostaglandins that may interfere with the medications that will be prescribed.
- You should not engage in sexual intercourse once you have taken the tablets.
Follow-up Appointment
- Approximately one week after you have taken the tablets — we’ll evaluate you in office to determine the completeness of the pregnancy expulsion.
- Our team will perform a sonogram.
- If your pregnancy termination is complete, our team will discuss birth control (contraception) and will prescribe the appropriate method to suite your needs.
- Most women will continue to bleed lightly for 2 to 4 weeks after expelling the uterine contents.
- If the pregnancy tissue has not passed, you can choose to repeat with medication management, or we can schedule you for a D&C surgical abortion.
NOTICE: For the privacy and safety of all patients and staff we ask that you to be aware of the following. Thank you!
- Children are not allowed in the office
- No food allowed
- No backpacks allowed
- Guests are not allowed beyond the waiting area
- Private parking at rear of building
- Protestors if any, are not allowed inside the parking lot
